Belle / Althea [Double Drabble] Rated K
"One day Queen Althea will be out of her reach."
Growing up poor meant Belle didn’t have options. Most of her clothes are handmade or modified using the scraps of previous outfits that have long outlived their intended use. That’s why, when the Queen of Alfitaria herself offers Belle a dress that is worth more than she’d could have ever earned in her lifetime, she didn’t hesitate to turn Althea down. Each embroidered sparkle’s value felt as if it could have been better spun somewhere else, for someone who has less, and maybe for someone who’s more worthy.
“I’m just a really plain and simple person.” Belle lied.
It was gorgeous and, once upon a dream, she’d spin around with fishing lines and beach glass tied to her. The open beach was her ballroom and the waves were cheers and applause. There’s a brief moment of childish hesitation before she returns the dress. Althea looked devastated, but she wants to believe that it’s for the best. Someone like Belle shouldn’t get too wrapped up in this dream that could never last.
One day Queen Althea will be out of her reach.
But for today... “You want me to make you something instead? I know you were looking forward to matching.”
